“Soybean meal is considered the ‘best value’ in animal feed,” said Scott Singlestad, who grows soybeans and raises pigs on his farm in Waseca, Minnesota, and is a farmer-leader for CheckOff. “Feeding soybean meal to cattle and poultry is a great source of protein, so it’s a good thing not only for soybean and livestock farmers, but also for potential international buyers.”
Livestock farming uses 97% of the U.S. soybean meal, making it the largest user of U.S. soybeans. Because of its importance to the U.S. soybean industry and farmers’ financial returns, CheckOff has made supporting livestock farming a top priority. CheckOff works with organizations like USMEF and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council to increase the consumption of U.S. meat and poultry abroad.
Economic growth is driving continued growth in meat and poultry consumption around the world. "Once a country "started to eat better, they wanted more protein in their diet," Singlestad said. "There's no better way than to eat more meat."
