At the farmer level, each kilogram of Pajama rice is sold for an average of Tk 30.65. That rice is sold at the retail level for Tk 59.69. That means that the price of rice is doubling from the farmer or farm to the retail level.
This information has been revealed in a study titled ‘Food Value Chain: Market System, Profits and Middlemen in Bangladesh’ by the private research institute Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD). CPD senior researcher Fakhruddin Al Kabir presented the results of the study at a dialogue organized at the BRAC Center Inn in the capital on Thursday.
What does CPD say about other products
The same study by CPD also talks about other products. It is said that similarly, the price of lentils, onions, potatoes, green chillies, brinjals, brinjals, eggs, beef, fish, broiler chickens The general calculation of logistics costs around the world is equal to 10 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), but in Bangladesh it is 16 percent.
The Commerce Minister further said that more than one crore tons of potatoes have been produced for two years. But even two years ago, potato farmers did not get money (income in line with production costs), and they still do not get it. Why are farmers cultivating potatoes again? They do not get real money from this market. According to him, to control inflation overall, logistics costs must be reduced. Import costs must also be reduced. He said, ‘Some people talk about stopping extortion, I say “unaccounted” costs must be reduced. We are identifying every stage from the beginning of production to the market, where there are problems.’
