President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that to make the agricultural sector profitable, the government must provide incentives and help farmers. Subsidies should be provided in agriculture. Although the World Bank-IMF prevent subsidies. He said this at a meeting with agricultural scientists organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute on Thursday (October 15, 2026).

The President said that there is a need to solve the deficit in the sectors through research. Farmers do not get a price after production, and when farmers grow crops, they have to buy seeds at a higher price. Stating that cold storage is necessary to store fruits and vegetables for a long time, he said that the private sector should come forward for this.

Stating that agriculture is not profitable now, the President said that due to lack of livelihood, there are no workers available in the fields. Many people are leaving their profession because agriculture is not profitable now. In this regard, the government must provide incentives and help farmers.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam said that there has been a revolution in onion cultivation, now it is no longer necessary to import. Although Bangladesh has made progress in the field of fruits, its process is not pleasant. Farmers need to be made aware of the use of fertilizers in the land. Fertilizer use reduces fertility in the land.

Regarding agricultural scientists, he said that the opportunities and benefits of agricultural scientists need to be increased. Even if the law is changed, pension arrangements for agricultural scientists should be made. He said that everything has been destroyed during the long fascist rule. Arbitrariness and corruption have permeated all institutions. Now is the opportunity to come out of it. If everyone is patient and moves forward slowly, success will come.

The current challenges and prospects of Bangladesh's agriculture came up in this exchange of views. The speakers said that along with production in agriculture, attention should be paid to quality. Currently, the production of many products has increased in Bangladesh, but now we need to focus on exports. Initiatives should be taken to deliver products not only to Bangladeshis but also to people around the world. In addition, emphasis was placed on research to further improve pesticides, keeping the environment in mind.
