Sugarcane crushing at Rajshahi Sugar Mills (RSM) began here on Friday with a target of producing 6,930 tonnes of sugar by crushing 75,000 tonnes of sugarcane within the next 67 days of the current 2025-26 season.
RSM Managing Director Humayun Kabir said they have set a target of 5.5 kilograms of sugar after crushing every 100 kilograms of sugarcane this year.
Secretary to the Ministry of Industries Obaidur Rahman addressed the opening ceremony as the chief guest, while Chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) Rashidul Hassan was in the chair.
BSFIC Secretary Mujibur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Afia Akhter, Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam, and RSM Managing Director Humayun Kabir also spoke on the occasion.
Secretary Obaidur Rahman said the present interim government has stepped up different efforts to make the sugar industry a profitable organisation. The government also has a plan to refine raw sugar during the off-season, he added.
The Industries secretary urged the farmers to grow more sugarcane and the factory workers to help run their units properly. He also said the government would take all steps to sustain the sugar mills, the only heavy industry in the region. Obaidur Rahman further urged the sugarcane farmers to supply sugarcane to the mills to fulfill the production target of sugar and also called upon them not to sell sugarcane to the molasses (gur) traders.
