Uttam Biswas of Raghunathpur village of Raghunathpur union of Gopalganj Sadar upazila has got a bumper yield of vegetables under the mulching method. They are not dying in the field. By cultivating brinjal on 20 percent of the land with the mulching method, he has succeeded.
He applied urea, TSP, and potash fertilizers in lump form in the field. Keeping the field clean with regular maintenance. So after 65 days of planting, he started collecting brinjal from the field. Now the age of eggplant cultivation in the field is 83 days. So far he has collected 1 thousand kg of brinjal. He sold brinjal at the rate of Tk 140 per kg. As such, he sold Tk 1 lakh 40 thousand of brinjal. There are still brinjals in the field that can be sold for Tk 1 lakh. Farmers will be able to collect and sell brinjal from the field till January 15. It is expected that he will sell brinjal worth at least 3 lakh rupees from this field. Uttam Biswas cultivated brinjal on 20 percent of the land by spending only Tk 38 thousand.
The farmer said he cultivated brinjal using the mulching method on the advice of Pradeep Halder, assistant agricultural officer of the Digharkul block of Raghunathpur union of the Directorate of Agricultural Extension. Due to this reason, water did not collect at the base of the tree even in heavy rain. The tree did not die. I applied urea, TNP, and potash fertilizers in lumps at a distance of 8/9 inches from the base of the plant. I always kept the field clean. Hence the attack of fruit and tip borer on brinjal is much less. By doing this, I got a bumper yield of brinjal. I am getting good price of brinjal in the market. I have already collected Tk 1 lakh 40 thousand from the sale of brinjal. There are still eggplants worth Tk 1 lakh in the field. I will be able to collect eggplant till January 15. It is expected that at least 3 lakh rupees worth of brinjal will be sold. It is possible to make a profit by cultivating brinjal in this method. At that time, I could not have brought home so much money if I had cultivated another success. I have seen many people showing interest in this method of vegetable cultivation in the future.
Assistant Agriculture Officer Pradeep Halder said, Farmer Uttam accepted our advice. Besides, I regularly visited his farm. He was successful in planting Bhangur and Bikash varieties of brinjal in that field. If vegetables are grown in this method during the monsoon season, it is possible to get a bumper yield of vegetables. This cultivation method of Uttam was invented long ago in the country's agriculture. But in this block of Raghunathpur Union, a mulching system has been planted for the first time this year. Seeing Uttam's cultivation, many farmers have shown interest in this method of vegetable cultivation. If this method can be extended, the production of vegetables will increase during the monsoon season. Farmers will benefit by selling vegetables at higher prices. We are working towards that goal.
Amal Mandal, a farmer of Raghunathpur village, said that some of our land falls during the monsoon season. There it is possible to profit by cultivating vegetables in this way. Uttam has set such an example. In the future, I will produce vegetables in this way.
Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Mafroza Akhter said we want to increase crop production by introducing new farming methods. Along with that, we are working to increase the income of farmers. The farmer has set a good example by using such an agricultural technology. Eggplant benefited from bumper yields and good prices.
