Mongla, the country's second largest seaport, sees a record number of ships arrive at the port every year. 21,651 TEU containers were handled at Mongla Port in the seven months of the current fiscal year (2025-26), with the arrival of 31 foreign commercial container ships. This is 79.19 percent more than in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Earlier, a total of 21,456 TEU containers were handled in the 2024-25 fiscal year. This was handled in 7 months of the current fiscal year.

Mongla Port Authority Senior Deputy Manager, Md. Makruzzaman told BSS that 515 foreign commercial ships arrived in the seven months from July 2025 to January 2026. During this period, 6,404 reconditioned vehicles were imported. Cargo handling was 82 lakh 66 thousand metric tons. This is 25.03 percent more than in the same period last year.

He said that in the 13th National Parliament election, the BNP-led alliance formed the government with an absolute majority. I sincerely congratulate the newly elected government. We are hopeful that under the responsible leadership of the new government, imports and exports will also increase along with the increase in ship arrivals through Mongla Port, which will be able to play an important role in the country's economy.

Makruzzamana said, there are still four and a half months left in the 2025-26 fiscal year. However, we have already exceeded last year's container handling. For the convenience of port users, three new operational anchor berths have been declared in the Hiron Point area. In the meantime, operational activities have been successfully completed on 16 (sixteen) commercial ships of 9.00 meter draft in the said berths on an experimental basis. From now on, it will be possible to carry out cargo operations on commercial ships of a maximum length of 200 meters and 9.00 meter draft in the said berths.

Currently, essential goods such as food grains, cement raw materials, clinker, fertilizer, automobiles, machinery, rice, wheat, coal, oil, stone, corn, oilseeds, and LPG are imported through Mongla Port, and various Bangladeshi products including white fish, shrimp, jute and jute products, frozen food, crab, clay tiles, silk fabrics, and general cargo are exported through Mongla Port.
