The National Consumer Rights Protection Department has said
that it is preparing for the campaign to keep the price of rice stable. The
government agency said that a case will be filed against someone if there is
evidence of illegal stockpiling and manipulation.
AHM Safiquzzaman, director general of the department, said
this at an exchange meeting on the current market of rice held at the company's
Karwan Bazar office on Monday (June 6, 2022). He alleged that a group was
spreading panic by spreading misleading information at that time.
The meeting was attended by rice wholesalers and retailers
of three major rice markets of the capital Babu Bazar, Karwan Bazar and
Mohammadpur Krishi Bazar as well as representatives of various corporate houses
including Mill Owners, City Group, Pran Group, Akij Group, Meghna Group,
Bangladesh Edible Oil. Representatives of corporate houses claim that the rice
market is not involved in instability.
However, the wholesalers and retailers present at the
meeting blamed each other for the instability in the rice market. He also
expressed concern that the situation could become more complicated if the
dominance of corporate companies in the market increases. However, corporates
say they do not have the market share.
Meanwhile, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has said
that rice will be imported privately to keep the rice market normal. After the
meeting of the Food Planning and Containment Committee (FPMC) yesterday (June
6, 2022), he said, "It has been decided to import rice privately today
(June 7, 2022) to keep the market stable."
