The interim government has decided to purchase 13.575 million liters of soybean oil from Thailand to maintain a normal supply of edible oil in the country's domestic market.
Last Tuesday (January 6, 2026), the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement, held under the chairmanship of Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, approved this important proposal. In view of the proposal of the Ministry of Commerce, the process of importing this huge amount of oil from Thailand's 'Prime Crop World Company Limited' through the international direct purchase method has been finalized.
According to government estimates, the total expenditure of the government on this oil purchase will be 178 crore 47 lakh 39 thousand 187 taka 50 paisa, where the price of soybean oil per liter will be 131 taka 47 paisa.
In this meeting held at the Secretariat, the Advisory Council Committee also approved separate proposals to import not only soybean oil, but also lentils, fertilizer, and fuel oil to meet the country's urgent needs. Instructions have been given to start the process of bringing these products to the country quickly to keep the supply chain of the trade and agriculture sector running.
The officials present at the meeting said that direct purchase from the international market will ensure the quality of the products and will make it possible to supply them to the local market in a short time. It is expected that this stock of soybean oil will restore stability in the market, especially considering the daily needs of the common people.
Financial Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters after the meeting that transparency and speed are being given top priority in importing products. This initiative of the government will have a positive impact on the current market situation of edible oil, and there will be no fear of any shortage in Ramadan or the coming months.
It is worth noting that in the context of recent fluctuations in oil prices in the international market, the tender of this Thai company has been considered affordable and convenient for the government. In addition, the government is also emphasizing on maintaining the continuity of imports of essential products by maintaining normal trade relations with neighboring countries.
